Rick Derringer, the prolific guitarist, singer, and producer whose career spanned over six decades, passed away on May 26, 2025, at the age of 77. He died in Ormond Beach, Florida, following complications from a heart-related medical episode. His wife, Jenda Derringer, and longtime friend and caretaker, Tony Wilson, were by his side at the time of his passing.
Born Richard Dean Zehringer on August 5, 1947, in Celina, Ohio, Derringer's musical journey began in his teenage years. At just 17, he achieved national fame as the frontman of The McCoys with their 1965 chart-topping hit “Hang On Sloopy.” The song not only became a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 but also earned the distinction of being Ohio's official rock song, cementing Derringer's place in rock history.
Derringer's solo career took off in the 1970s with the release of his debut album, All American Boy, in 1973. The album featured the enduring hit “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” which became a staple on classic rock radio and showcased his exceptional guitar skills.
Throughout his career, Derringer collaborated with a plethora of renowned artists. He played a pivotal role in the Edgar Winter Group, contributing to hits like “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride.” His versatility as a musician led him to work with legends such as Johnny Winter, Alice Cooper, Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren, Barbra Streisand, Air Supply, Bonnie Tyler, Meat Loaf, and Cyndi Lauper.
Beyond performing, Derringer made significant contributions as a producer. He notably worked with “Weird Al” Yankovic, producing several Grammy-winning parodies, including “Eat It” and “Fat.” His production prowess extended to the world of professional wrestling, where he co-wrote and performed “Real American,” the iconic entrance theme for Hulk Hogan. The song transcended wrestling, later being used in political events and campaigns.
In his later years, Derringer remained active in the music scene, touring with Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band and releasing his final album, Rock the Yacht, in 2023. His enduring influence was evident as his music continued to resonate with new generations, featuring in films like Dazed and Confused and TV series such as Stranger Things.
