Lizzo is once again speaking candidly about her relationship with her body, sharing that she has gained 20 pounds over the past year while continuing to challenge unrealistic beauty standards and encourage healthier conversations about body image. Rather than viewing the change as a setback, the Grammy Award winning singer says it reflects the natural reality of life, reminding fans that health is an evolving journey rather than a fixed destination.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 38 year old singer addressed questions surrounding her weight after months of public discussion about her dramatic transformation. Lizzo revealed that she has gained 20 pounds since last year and said she wanted to be just as open about weight gain as she had been about weight loss. She explained that body fluctuations are completely normal for her and should not be viewed as something negative.

The singer also used the opportunity to criticize what she described as a relentless culture that places enormous pressure on women, particularly those in the public eye. According to Lizzo, society often profits from making women feel dissatisfied with their appearance by convincing them they constantly need to change themselves. She argued that this cycle encourages insecurity while creating unrealistic expectations that are nearly impossible to meet.

Reflecting on the beginning of her health journey, Lizzo explained that there was never one single reason behind her decision to focus on wellness. She rejected the idea that people should reduce complex personal experiences into simple headlines. Instead, she said multiple factors contributed to her lifestyle changes, including physical discomfort and a desire to regain control over areas of her life during a difficult period.

One of the biggest motivations, she revealed, was persistent joint pain and body aches that had begun affecting her daily life. She also described stepping away from social media for a period, allowing herself to focus on music, personal routines and healthier habits without the constant noise of public opinion. During that time, she devoted herself to improving her overall wellbeing through changes she could personally control.

Lizzo first surprised fans in January 2025 when she announced that she had reached a weight she had not seen since 2014. The milestone generated widespread attention, with many speculating about how she had achieved the transformation. Throughout the process, however, the singer consistently maintained that her goal was never simply to become smaller. Instead, she emphasized that she wanted to feel stronger, healthier and more comfortable in her own body.

Now, after regaining some of the weight, Lizzo says nothing has changed about how she views herself. She explained that she still wears plus size clothing and still embraces many of the same physical features she has always celebrated. Rather than feeling discouraged, she sees herself as simply a different version of the same person. For her, confidence has never depended on maintaining a specific number on a scale.

The singer also reflected on what she believes has changed within online culture. She expressed concern that social media has become increasingly driven by harsh criticism, with the most hurtful comments often receiving the most attention. Lizzo argued that this growing acceptance of cruelty affects everyone, particularly women whose appearances are constantly scrutinized. She encouraged people to direct criticism toward unhealthy systems rather than individuals who are simply navigating ordinary human experiences.

Despite the ongoing public attention surrounding her body, Lizzo continues to advocate for body positivity. She believes the movement is not about remaining exactly the same forever but about having the freedom to exist confidently regardless of changes in appearance. In her view, people should be allowed to pursue healthier lifestyles, experience natural body fluctuations and still feel worthy of respect and self acceptance.

As Lizzo continues promoting her latest music and expanding her career, she remains committed to using her platform to encourage honest conversations about health, confidence and self worth. By openly discussing both weight loss and weight gain, she hopes to remind others that wellness is rarely a straight path. Instead, it is a lifelong process shaped by changing circumstances, personal growth and the willingness to extend compassion both to ourselves and to others.
